Lady Vikings golf takes second place at conference tourney, pair named All-Conference

Avery Lady Vikings golf finished in second place behind conference power Hendersonville at last week's Western Highlands Conference Golf Tournament, held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15 and 16.

Avery Lady Vikings golf finished in second place behind conference power Hendersonville at last week's Western Highlands Conference Golf Tournament, held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15 and 16.

The Big Red fired a first-round team score of 293 at Henderosnville Country Club on the first day of tournament action. Paige Church paced the Lady Vikings by firing a 95, followed by a 96 from Nikki Wright, a score of 102 from Alexis Usko, 103 by Kristen Burleson and 107 from Devyn Plyler.

AHS improved its score on day two, shooting a team score of 286 as it played a more familiar venue in Spruce Pine's Grassy Creek Golf Course.

Burleson was low scorer for the Lady Vikings with an 18-hole round of 92. Church fired a 96, with 98 from Usko, 109 from Wright and 112 by Plyler.

Mountain Heritage captured third place at the tournament, followed by Owen, Polk and Thomas Jefferson.

A pair of Lady Vikings, Church and Burleson, were named to the All-Conference team for their efforts.

Avery returned to the course on Tuesday, Oct. 23, to participate in NCHSAA Western Regional Tournament, held at Meadowbrook Golf Course near Rurtherfordton. A full report on team and individual performances can be found in next week's edition of The AJT.
