Lady Vikings junior varsity hoops routs Owen, TJCA

Jamie Shell / (

Avery Lady Vikings junior varsity basketball continues its recent string of strong performances, downing the Owen Warlassies 41-20 in a road contest on Tuesday, Jan. 22, followed up by a 30-11 victory over Thomas Jefferson Academy on Thursday, Jan. 24.

The Big Red opened its contest at Owen with a 14-4 run to take a 10-point advantage into the second period. AHS freshman Elizabeth Pittman scored 10 points in the stanza to pace the Big Red.

Avery outscored Owen 12-8 in the second period to take a commanding 26-12 lead at halftime. Both clubs started slowly to open the second half, combining for just 10 points in the third quarter. The Lady Vikings seized control of the game for good with an 11-point final period, with baskets by Pittman, Jessica Hoilman, Anne Marie Liles, Alyssa Carter and Sara Beth Daniels to clinch a 41-20 victory.

Pittman paced the Lady Vikings with 13 points, with 10 points from Daniels. Kyra Holloway scored 10 points to lead the Warlassies.

Avery put together perhaps its strongest defensive effort of the season in its defeat of TJCA. The Big Red held TJCA in single-digit scoring until early in the fourth quarter.

AHS led 13-5 after one quarter, and used a 9-2 scoring spurt in the second period to take a 22-7 lead into halftime.

The two clubs managed only three points in the third quarter, but Avery regrouped to finish strong and earn the 19-point win.

Pittman and Destiny Ollis led 10 Lady Vikings scorers with five points each, with four points from Brandy Banner and Chistian Burleson.

Avery returned to conference action this week with a home game at Hendersonville on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and a road contest at Polk this Friday, Feb. 1.
