Lady Vikings softball drops rain-soaked playoff opener to Elkin

Jamie Shell / (sports@averyjournal.com)

Avery Lady Vikings softball opened postseason play on Friday, May 10, with a home game in the rain against visiting Elkin, out of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. The teams played evenly throughout the game with the exception of a six-run second inning that proved to be the difference in an 11-8 Elkin win, ending Avery’s 2013 season.

Elkin plated a run in the top of the first inning, only to see Avery answer with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame. Leadoff hitter Kenzie Thomas drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch by Elkin hurler Caylea Shoemaker to tie the game. Avery had the chance to take a lead, but stranded two runners in scoring position.
