Lady Vikings tames Warlassies in abbreviated hoops week

Due in large part to bouts of inclement weather, Avery Lady Vikings varsity basketball managed to play only one contest last week, a rescheduled matchup in Swannanoa against the Owen Warhorses on Thursday, Jan. 23.
A strong second and third quarter gave the Lady Vikings the distance it needed to earn a 59-42 conference win.
Avery got off to a slow start on offense, scoring only eight points in the frame. Owen fared no better, however, as the Warlassies trailed AHS 8-7 after eight minutes of action. The Big Red slightly extended its lead in the second quarter as the offense began firing and shots began to fall. A 16-point second-quarter burst propelled Avery to a 24-18 margin at halftime.
Whatever occurred during the intermission only served to
focus the Lady Vikings in the third quarter. Avery’s defense forced a number of
steals in the quarter and allowed the Big Red to get out in transition and
score to the tune of a season-high 22 points in the period. The run put the
Warlassies on its collective heels, as Avery opened up a 46-30 lead entering
the final quarter.
Head coach Matt Wiseman was able to utilize his entire bench in the final quarter, as the club outscored Owen 13-12 in the fourth period to secure the 17-point win.
