Following its dispatching of Thomas Jefferson the previous weekend, Avery hosted Murphy in the second round of the NCHSAA 1A state volleyball playoffs in Viking Gym on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The teams played a match closer than the scores indicated, as Murphy prevailed in three straight sets by the set scores of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-21, respectively.

The first game was a nip-and-tuck affair, as neither team could build greater than a three-point advantage. Late in the set Avery held a 20-17 advantage, but a 5-2 Murphy scoring run tied the set at 22 apiece. The set eventually went into extra points, with the Bulldogs earning the 26-24 triumph.
