Avery wrestling snapped a recent drought of sending wrestlers to the state tournament in a big way last weekend.
Four wrestlers out of Avery’s 11 that competed at last week’s 1A Western Regional Wrestling Championships placed fourth or better, earning berths in this weekend’s NCHSAA 1A State Wrestling Championships at Greensboro Coliseum. A pair of additional wrestlers fell one win shy of qualifying for the state tournament. As a team, Avery finished sixth out of 25 teams in points.
Fellow WHC competitor Mitchell won last weekend’s regional as a team and sends nine wrestlers to this weekend’s state tournament. Avery and Mitchell’s combined effort more than quadrupled the combined number of state placers by the rest of the conference, as the 2A portion of the WHC combined last weekend to place only three wrestlers at the state championships.
