North Carolina Cheerleading Coaches Association recently named a quartet of Avery High School cheerleaders, Carson Clark, Abigail Fortune, Maggie Shadoin and Samantha Strauss, to the 2011-12 North Carolina All-Region team. The ladies have also earned academic honors and have been named scholar athletes.

The girls participated in All-Region tryouts held in November 2011, and judges selected the cheerleaders from either video auditions or live tryouts. Selection requires that nominees are current high school juniors that are currently cheering and maintain a high grade point average, in addition to a school endorsement and recommendation by his or her high school coach.

Clark is a Northwest Regional FFA vice president and Avery High FFA officer. She plans to pursue a career as a certified registered anesthetist. She is an active member of both student government and Health Occupation Students of America. Clark has played softball and cheered for the last three years.

Strauss previously cheered at Northwest High School in Greensboro. She is a member of Young Life and plans to play soccer this season. She wants to major in history and become a high school teacher. Strauss competed with her cheer squads at Northwest and has enjoyed transferring her skills to AHS.

Fortune is an active member of FFA and is a member of a state-qualifying Parliamentary Procedure team. She is also a member of yearbook staff. Upon graduation, Fortune aspires to attend AVEDA Cosmetology Institute in Raleigh to become a licensed hair technician. She has cheered for AHS for three years and was named Most Spirited at the 2011 AHS Athletic Banquet.

Shadoin dreams of becoming a college cheerleader. She was named All-American Cheerleader for the last two years. Shadoin has danced for 12 years and cheered for both Avery and a competitive cheer team for three years. She is president of Key Club, a member of Avery Smooth Dancers and student government. Upon graduation, she plans to major in medicine and become a physician’s assistant.
The girls were recognized and presented with regional awards at N.C. State Cheerleading Championships held Saturday, Feb. 11, at Raleigh Convention Center. The girls are now qualified to attend All-State tryouts, which will occur in late May. Members of All-State team will cheer at East-West All-Star football and basketball games.
