Soccer drops defensive battle at Owen

Avery soccer faced off with one of the top-ranked 2A soccer teams in the state on Wednesday, Sept. 4, in Swannanoa, when it traveled to take on the Owen Warhorses. The Vikings played a tough-nosed match, but struggled offensively to peal shots into the Owen goal. OHS found similar difficulty, taking only five shots on goal against Avery keeper Alex Magner.

Owen scored the match's lone goal in the 50th minute, when Matt Begley took an assist from teammate Caleb Ford and slipped a shot into the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

"I thought the guys played extremely well. We did a much better job controlling our midfield area, which had been giving us trouble all season long, but the guys really stepped up and did a great job limiting what Owen could do," Avery head soccer coach Bruce Daniels said. "Owen's a very solid team. You always want to get a win out of those sorts of games like this, especially against a team with the quality of Owen. I'm very pleased with the way we played."
