Wrestling finishes second at tri tournament

The Vikings hosted a tri tournament on Thursday, Nov. 29, between AHS, East Wilkes and Draughn. Avery beat East Wilkes with an overall score of 45-34 and lost to Draughn 37-42. 

The Vikings posted eight wins against East Wilkes. Will Jordan won in the 106-pound weight class by a pin. Alex Clark, Trevor Pickins and Preston Childress each won with a forfeit in the 113, 195 and 126 weight classes, respectively. Ben Clark won off of a decision in the 120-pound weight class and Zac Freeman, Jonah Tenge and Blake Johnson each won with a pin in the 145, 170 and 285 weight classes, respectively. 

The Vikings did not post as good of results against the Draughn Wildcats. AHS had seven winners against the Wildcats. Jordan and Clark both posted wins by pinning their opponent in the 106 and 113 weight classes. Chris Clark won in the 132-pound weight class with a forfeit. Freeman and Josh Gragg both won by a decision in the 145 and 152 weight classes, respectively. Harley Foster and Ryan Sheppard chipped in wins in the 160 and 220 weight classes with pins, respectively. 

The Vikings returned to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, when the team traveled to Patton High for the Big Cat Invitational. The team will return to the mat on Thursday, Dec. 6, when Avery hosts a tri tournament against Ashe County and Watauga. The tournament begins at 6 p.m.
