Avery wrestling traveled last weekend to McDowell High School to compete at Titan Duals. The Vikings captured a pair of wins in five matches, highlighted by a victory against rival Watauga.

Even in defeat, a number of Vikings earned bout victories during the day’s festivities. In its match against South Caldwell, including Preston Childress (126 pounds), Harley Rash (132 pounds), Ryan Sheppard (195 pounds) and Blake Johnson (285 pounds).

The Big Red accented a strong performance by earning a dual victory against the Pioneers. Bout winners against the Pioneers included Will Jordan, who earned a second period pinfall at 106 pounds and Childress, who won by pin in 28 seconds at 126 pounds. Brennan Clark picked up a second-period victory by pin, while teammate Zac Freeman earned a forfeit victory.

Avery was dominant in the upper weight classes against the Pioneers, which proved key in its 51-28 team victory. Dale Russ earned a first-period pin at 170 pounds, while junior Jonah Tenge earned a pin in 70 seconds at 182 pounds. Freshman Sheppard continued his string of solid performances with an 8-3 decision win against Watauga’s Jeremy Critcher at 195 pounds, with Scott Wiseman earning a second-period pin at 220 pounds. Johnson also earned an impressive victory, taking a first-period pinfall win.

The Vikings also grappled against East Burke last week. Despite falling by a 45-27 score in the dual meet, Avery’s Alex Clark (113 pounds), Childress (126 pounds), Rash (138 pounds), Freeman (152 pounds) and Sheppard (195 pounds) earned bout victories.
